Building an in-law suite
in your family home
You want to add an in-law suite to your home, but you’re not sure where to start. It’s a big project, and one that is 100% worth doing right the first time. Once your mother-in-law is in the unit, you don’t want them to have to move back out or be unable to use the space if there any safety issues or additional construction needs arise.
If your mother-in-law or another elderly family member is moving in, you want to make sure that every square foot of converted space is safe and ready for them to use. You’ll need to consider how a full kitchen and bathroom along with safety-specific features like grab bars can help them remain self-sufficient while maintaining everyone’s privacy. Whether it’s designing the suite, getting permits, or doing the construction, you need a home addition contractor who will be able to help you every step of the way.
In law suites are a great way to have your family close without having to share living space. If a separate bedroom in your single family home just won’t do, an in-law suite is the way to go. Whether it’s a converted garage or a new construction small cottage on the same lot, FERRUZZO General Contractor can help complete your in-law suite project. We have years of experience designing and building in-law suites, and we’ll make sure the process goes smoothly from beginning to end.
What is an in-law suite?
An in-law suite, also known as a mother-in-law suite, is an accessory dwelling unit often used for housing family. They are extremely convenient and mainly used when three or more generations share the same household, such as when aging parents move in. A separate entrance to the mother-in-law suite creates additional privacy and separation, and soundproofing can ensure that the separate households don’t disturb each other too much.
Of course, your in-law suite addition doesn’t have to just be for your mother-in-law. Accessory dwelling units can serve as a guest room for other family members, or create additional income for you through rental opportunities.
